Just aim and shoot, right?  Anyone that’s interested in photography knows better than to think that taking pictures is just that simple.  Sure, pointing your camera at something or someone will certainly record an event, but if you really want photographs that are outstanding treasures then you are ready to learn some more advanced photography techniques.  These Digital SLR Tips can apply to digital photos from a vacation, your friends, your baby or children, or if you want to do photography as a part time job to supplement your income.

How the rule of thirds can improve your pictures

Ok, I have to admit it when I first started photography over twenty five years ago as a professional photographer when a professional photographer mentioned that I needed to apply the rule of thirds to my pictures I thought he was ridiculous. Part of the reason that I felt insulted was because pretty much all of my pictures had the subject right smack in the middle of the frame!

This “Rule” of Thirds can be applied to your outdoor photography or portrait photography. For example, when you are on vacation and you are photographing a pristine lake at sunset, instead of putting the horizon line in the middle of the frame place it in the lower thirds instead. It will definitely make a more interesting, dynamic and more professional type of image.

Here’s an example of using this same Rule of Thirds Concept with your family photos: Place your children or child on the lower third of the frame whether they are fishing, playing in a pool or getting off a slide. I realized that this concept goes way beyond the basic principles taught in Digital Photography For Dummies, but if you challenge yourself with this concept you will feel better about your photography.

Are you varying the angle or height of your photos?

For many years professional photographers would have the camera at the same angle or height as the subjects eye level. However now, especially with wedding photographers, professional photographers are using exaggerated angles. Some of these angles include being higher than the subject, and the other type is having your subject higher than your camera angle. In both situations they create very interesting and a more dynamic image. These digital photography tricks work great for children and teenager photography.

For Flower Photography it’s fun to try different angles to make your images so much more creative and interesting. Amy Renfrey, who is a master of flower photography and featured author on this website www.photographybyproductsandreviews.com, always experiments with different angles and approaches to her beautiful work.

Applying photography techniques for angles means moving yourself and your camera around for unique and interesting shots.  If you want to shoot a beautiful flower garden, try getting right down on the ground so they’re in front of you, rather than just standing above them.  To take a picture of your new motorcycle, try getting down on the ground and aiming above you so that it really captures the majesty of the bike.  Play around a bit with angles when it comes to pictures of people as well; by being experimental and creative, you can come up with your own special photography techniques that are perfect for you, your subjects, and your photos.

We sincerely hope that you will remember these simple but effective Digital SLR Tips That Will Improve Your Photography: Using the Rule of Thirds and varying the camera angle or height when you’re photographing your family, friends or scenics.
